Atse Yohannes Palace,  area 63,000 m2

A 130 years old place has all the collections of the king Yohannes stuff. The chair and church collections like books, cross, paints. Emperor Yohannes choose Mekelle as the seat of his government and built his graceful palace. Still intact, in 1870 the palace is now serve as a museum. The Emperors throne, royal bed, ceremonial dress, rifles and many other valuable historical collections can be seen in the museum.

I took the palace character by integrating it with contemporary design. Also the construction method from the palace which is doing the facade using stone construction material. Keeping and appreciating our history is the main target for the design so at some part of the design I will be using the exact design from the palace as it is with the architecture style currently so that we can tell the past, the present and also the future at the same time.

Concept

The for cubic shaped spaces which are found in both side of the building represents the Atse Yohannnes palace

by material usage and also the use of the space, which is fancy and can create the feeling of a palace. So you can identify the palace within the modern architectural style in the form of the building as well as by the feeling of the space in side. In this space, along the long open corridor the furnishing and the opening system is from the modern architectural style so the feeling you get is different from the palace. Also adding design patterns from our cultural dress for the facade to give its own unique identity for the building.
